A scam ring in Hong Kong used deepfakes to replace photos on lost identity cards with fraudsters' faces, bypassing bank verification checks to open accounts. They merged scammers' facial features with cardholders' appearances using deepfake technology and uploaded selfies to impersonate cardholders during online verification. 30 out of 44 applications were successful. Eight people were arrested in connection to the scam.
