While searching for her missing emotional support dog near Eagle Marsh in late August 2026, Heather Fritch became the target of a predatory extortion scam. After posting flyers and social media notices, she received a text message from an individual claiming to have found her dog and demanding $400 for its safe return.

What happened

The scammer sent a photograph of a dog that initially appeared to be Fritch’s missing pet, Daisy Mae. Although Fritch felt an initial wave of relief, she realized upon closer inspection that the image had been generated or altered using artificial intelligence. When Fritch challenged the sender by asking for specific details about the dog’s collar, the individual became angry and failed to provide proof of possession. Volunteer searcher Joe Jakacky, who assisted in the search efforts, noted that such digital fakes are designed to exploit the emotional vulnerability of owners, warning that victims who do not perform a detailed analysis of images may send money to scammers located anywhere in the world. Animal welfare groups report that these extortion scams involving manipulated or AI-generated images are becoming increasingly common nationwide.
