On August 4, 2026, social media posts circulated an AI-doctored image intended to suggest that India was orchestrating protests in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The misinformation claimed that an Indian official had participated in a demonstration in the United Kingdom in support of the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), a protest movement currently banned by the Pakistani government. The post alleged that this participation proved Indian backing of the group, which is embroiled in a sensitive political dispute regarding local legislative seats.

What happened

The incident involved a sophisticated manipulation of visual media to deceive the public. The circulating image purported to show a man at a protest in the UK, with an inset photo identifying him as Shri Ram Prakash, a staffer at the Indian High Commission in London. However, investigations revealed that the image had been altered using AI tools. A reverse image search linked the original footage of the demonstration to a rally in Luton, which featured a completely different individual.

Furthermore, the face superimposed onto the protester in the doctored image was not Shri Ram Prakash, but rather Harsh Kumar Jain, the Indian ambassador to the Philippines. The source photo of Jain was lifted from a 2024 meeting held during his previous tenure as India's ambassador to Ukraine. Analysis of the doctored image via OpenAI's verification tools detected a SynthID watermark, confirming the use of AI in its creation. This disinformation effort occurred amidst deadly clashes between protesters and security personnel in the Kashmir region, which has been divided between India and Pakistan since 1947.
