In July 2026, the San Francisco restaurant Grind & Unwind faced intense community backlash and property damage after displaying a large board of AI-generated food photography in its window. The incident highlights the growing friction between businesses using synthetic media for marketing and local consumers who perceive such imagery as dishonest or low-quality.

What happened

Shortly after owners AJ and Lyndsey Lozano opened the cafe on Haight Street, residents identified the promotional photos as AI-generated. The imagery quickly drew criticism on social media platforms like Reddit and Instagram, with commenters describing the visuals as "AI slop" and "false advertising." Critics specifically pointed to unappealing textures, such as bread resembling reptile skin, and argued that the use of synthetic images indicated a lack of care for the actual food quality.

The situation escalated when an individual vandalized the cafe’s facade, spraying the word "Serious" in red graffiti across the exterior. The owners expressed surprise at the intensity of the public reaction, noting that the display was intended to be temporary. The incident resulted in $700 in cleanup costs for the business. Following the backlash, the Lozanos removed the AI-generated signage and painted over the graffiti, replacing the display with LED lights and a physical pastry showcase. The owners have since focused on moving forward to establish the restaurant as a local gathering spot.
