In October 2026, a viral video circulated across social media platforms including Facebook, X, and TikTok, falsely claiming that the French National Police had deployed a unit of pigs to control protesters in Paris. The footage, which appeared during a period of widespread civil unrest in France, was used to spread misinformation in multiple languages, including Sinhala, English, Tamil, and Hindi. The video was framed by various accounts to mock protesters and incite religious tension by targeting Muslim populations, despite the ongoing protests being focused on school conditions and the cost of living.

What happened

The video originated from an Instagram account belonging to an AI content creator, Jaranor Films, which posted the clip on October 22, 2026, labeled as AI content. The 10-second clip featured CRS riot police leading pigs on leashes in front of a crowd. Analysis by multiple AI-detection tools confirmed the video was synthetic, with one tool identifying that the media was generated on October 18, 2026, three days before its initial publication.

Technical inconsistencies within the video further exposed its artificial nature. One pig’s harness was labeled "POLICE K9," a common shorthand for canine units, revealing that the AI had incorrectly applied a dog-unit tag to a pig. Additionally, background elements such as shop signs and protest placards appeared blurred or garbled, which are common artifacts of generative AI. The French National Police confirmed they maintain canine brigades but have no such "pig squad." The viral spread of the video relied on the authenticity of the real-world protest backdrop, which featured genuine CRS uniforms and Paris street scenes, to lend credibility to the fabricated narrative.
