In June 2026, a series of fabricated images depicting a wedding between pop star Dua Lipa and actor Callum Turner circulated rapidly across social media platforms including X, Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. While the images were intended as satirical art, they were widely mistaken for authentic wedding photography by various digital news outlets and social media users.

What happened

The images were created by Italian digital artist Rick Dick, who produces AI-generated content inspired by celebrities and the fashion industry. Although Dick originally shared the pictures on his own profile with the hashtag #ai and clear labels, the content reached a broader audience when other accounts reposted the images. In many cases, the artist's logo and original credit were removed, causing the visuals to be presented as genuine photographs of a wedding in Sicily.

The spread of these images highlights a growing challenge regarding the authentication of digital media. Several digital news outlets in India and South Africa incorrectly reported the images as real, and an Italian radio station, R101, posted the content to its Instagram account before later removing it. The artist expressed astonishment at the public's reaction, noting that he never intended to mislead viewers, as some of the images were deliberately absurd. This incident follows a similar trend earlier in the year involving actress Zendaya, who reported that people close to her believed AI-generated images of her marrying actor Tom Holland were authentic. While real photo agencies captured images of guests at a welcome party in Palermo during the actual three-day event, no official pictures of a ceremony or reception have emerged.
