On June 12, 2026, a viral image began circulating on social media claiming to depict eight simultaneous CCTV feeds of former State Intelligence Service Director Suresh Sallay being tortured while in custody. The image emerged on the same day that allegations of abuse were raised in Parliament, fueling public discourse regarding his treatment under the Criminal Investigation Department.

What happened

The image, formatted as an eight-frame split-screen, was debunked through forensic analysis and official confirmation. Police Media Spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wutler confirmed that the photos were fake and digitally edited. Further investigation revealed three significant inconsistencies that point to AI generation rather than genuine surveillance footage:

  • Perspective Errors: While the image purports to show multiple camera angles, every frame displays the exact same location from the identical angle, which is physically impossible for a standard multi-camera CCTV system.
  • Lack of Synchronization: In a genuine multi-camera feed, movements across different angles would be synchronized. In this image, the clothing, postures, and positions of the individuals vary inconsistently between frames.
  • Missing Metadata: Genuine CCTV footage consistently displays timestamps, seconds, and official camera identifiers. This image contained no such markers.

Multiple AI detection tools confirmed an extremely high probability that the image was created using artificial intelligence. Additionally, Facebook’s automated systems flagged the content with an “AI Info” label. No official CCTV footage of the alleged events has ever been released or made available. While separate legal proceedings and investigations by the Human Rights Commission regarding the allegations of torture remain ongoing, this specific viral photograph has been officially identified as a digital fabrication.
