A viral social media post appearing on X in September 2026 attempted to draw a physical comparison between Melania Trump and Caitlyn Jenner using a composite image. Investigations revealed that while the photograph of Melania Trump was authentic, the image of Caitlyn Jenner was entirely synthetic.

What happened

On September 17, 2026, an account on X shared a side-by-side comparison of the two women, claiming they shared a similar appearance. Fact-checkers utilized reverse image search tools to trace the source of the individual photographs. The image of Melania Trump was identified as a cropped, slightly saturated detail from an authentic press photo taken on January 21, 2025, at the National Cathedral during a National Day of Prayer service.

In contrast, the image of Caitlyn Jenner could not be linked to any original news photography or archives. Further technical analysis confirmed the synthetic nature of the image. When uploaded to the Hive Moderation AI-detection tool, the image was identified as 99.8% likely to be AI-generated. Additionally, using the OpenAI Verify tool, researchers discovered an invisible SynthID watermark embedded within the file. This watermark provided conclusive evidence that the image was created using OpenAI’s generative tools. The incident highlights the growing prevalence of AI-generated content being used to fuel misleading social media narratives and false visual comparisons.
