In May 2026, a Florida man's daughters were falsely accused of damaging a Lyft vehicle, triggering a fraud alert for a $75 damage fee. The evidence presented was an AI-altered image showing a mess in the back seat.

What happened

The father received a fraud alert from his bank and was sent a photo showing spilled fries and a drink in the back seat as proof of the damage. His daughters denied having food in the car and noticed a Google Gemini logo on the image, indicating AI manipulation. When the family pointed this out to Lyft, the company confirmed the image was AI-generated, apologized, and blocked the driver from the app. Lyft stated they take damage disputes seriously, offered reimbursement, unpaired the rider and driver, and addressed the matter with the driver.
