A Colombian woman is currently facing severe harassment and potential professional consequences after a man in California began an online campaign against her. The situation began after the woman ended a relationship with the man earlier this year, leading to persistent impersonation and the distribution of harmful media.
What happened
Following the end of their relationship in February, the man initiated a campaign of harassment that escalated from phone calls and insults to identity theft. He has regularly created Instagram accounts to impersonate the woman, using these platforms to message her friends and acquaintances. A significant component of this harassment involves the publication of intimate photos and videos, which include a combination of real images and AI-generated deepfakes.
The impact of this campaign has extended to the woman’s professional life, as she works at an elementary school and has been threatened with termination due to the circulation of these intimate materials. Despite reporting the accounts to Instagram, filing a formal complaint with Colombian police, and retaining legal counsel, the harassment has continued without resolution. The case highlights the challenges of addressing cross-border digital abuse and the specific difficulties victims face when personal and AI-synthesized content is weaponized to damage reputation and livelihood.
