In July 2026, a video circulating on Facebook, Instagram, and X falsely depicted a migrant on a small boat waving a machete and shouting inflammatory slogans. The clip was widely shared, including by political figures, before being debunked as an AI-manipulated fabrication.

What happened

The incident began when a manipulated video emerged online on July 1, 2026, featuring a man waving a machete and discarding documents into the English Channel. This version appeared to be an altered derivative of earlier footage, including a video published by GB News on June 30, which showed the same individual without a weapon. Investigative analysis and digital forensics experts confirmed the machete-wielding version was created using artificial intelligence, likely utilizing an image-to-video generator to modify the original source footage.

Key visual inconsistencies identified in the fake clip included the sudden disappearance and reappearance of the machete, fused fingers, and unnatural morphing of the man's clothing. Digital media forensics expert Dr. Siwei Lyu confirmed the presence of significant visual artifacts and high probability scores from automated detection tools. The video was shared with provocative captions claiming the migrant was bragging about the end of England. Susan Hall, the leader of the London Assembly Conservatives, shared the video but later deleted it, stating she did not initially recognize it as AI-generated. This case highlights the ease with which existing footage can be synthesized to create false narratives, underscoring the necessity of verifying content from trustworthy sources before engaging with or sharing it online.
