A Western New York couple is raising awareness after falling victim to a sophisticated AI voice cloning scam. Scammers used AI to mimic the voice of a woman named Amy, then used the clone to target her elderly mother-in-law.
What happened
The scammers called Amy's mother-in-law, claiming that Amy was in jail for killing someone and needed nearly $10,000 for bail. The ruse was convincing enough that the family paid the money before discovering that Amy was never in jail. A person from the local area even came to the victim's East Aurora home to collect the cash in person.
