A French tourist named Alban faced a fraudulent $1,755 damage claim from an Airbnb host after leaving a one-star review for his stay at two Hobart properties. The host, operating under the name The A Family, submitted an invoice for "foreign object extraction" and an image depicting an overflowing, clogged toilet to Airbnb's resolution center to justify the charges.
What happened
Following a dispute over his check-out, the host lodged a claim for $1,755, supported by an image of a toilet in a state of severe disrepair. Alban, suspicious of the image's authenticity, posted it to social media and utilized an AI detector to verify his concerns. Subsequent analysis by the ABC using Google's SynthID Detector confirmed that the image had been created or edited using Google AI.
Further investigation revealed that the invoices provided by the host were fraudulent; the businesses listed did not exist, the ABNs were invalid, and the contact emails were non-functional. The host also accused Alban of hosting unapproved guests, which he denied. Airbnb eventually investigated the complaint, rejected the host's damage claim, and provided Alban with a full refund of nearly $2,000 for his stays and missed tours. While Airbnb policy states that hosts providing false or misleading information can face suspension or bans, the company did not confirm if specific action would be taken against The A Family. Alban, who moved his return flights to France early due to the stress of the financial demands, noted that his ability to keep detailed records and his technical literacy were critical in successfully challenging the host's claims.
