A prominent Indonesian financial institution deepfake (Dec 2024)

Over 1,100 fraudulent loan application attempts and over 1,000 fraudulent accounts were created using AI-generated deepfake images to bypass biometric verification systems, including liveness detection. Attackers obtained victim IDs through illicit channels (malware, social media, dark web), manipulated the images, and used them to deceive the system. Attackers used AI-generated deepfakes to bypass biometric verification and liveness detection. They also employed virtual camera software and app cloning to manipulate biometric data and simulate multiple devices. Potential losses in Indonesia alone are estimated at $138.5 million.
