In June 2026, the Assam Police’s Crime Branch launched an investigation into students at two private schools in Guwahati following the circulation of digitally altered images depicting 64 schoolgirls and teachers. The incident, which came to light on June 12, 2026, involved the unauthorized creation and sale of explicit content on the messaging platform Telegram.

What happened

At least two students are alleged to have used artificial intelligence to create explicit imagery of their peers and educators. These altered files were then sold to others via Telegram, with prices reportedly set at ₹50 and ₹100 per image. The discovery prompted immediate action from school authorities and law enforcement. One of the involved institutions suspended the accused students and referred the case to the Child Abuse Monitoring Committee and other relevant panels. Joint Commissioner of Police Ankur Jain confirmed that the department has recorded statements from principals, counsellors, and the students involved in the distribution of the content. The individual who originally exposed the case is also participating in the ongoing investigation. In a formal statement, the affected school emphasized its zero-tolerance policy regarding cyber misconduct, harassment, and the misuse of digital platforms, while urging the school community to avoid spreading unverified information or rumors.
