French prosecutors are seeking charges against Elon Musk and the social platform X, alleging the platform hosted child sexual abuse images, deepfakes, and disinformation. The investigation also covers potential complicity in denying crimes against humanity linked to X's AI system, Grok.
What happened
The Paris public prosecutor's office initiated an investigation into X based on several charges. These include complicity in possessing and distributing child sexual abuse images and unlawfully collecting personal data. The investigation expanded to cover dissemination of non-consensual images, denial of crimes against humanity, and the manipulation of an automated data processing system. The probe was triggered by reports alleging biased algorithms on X distorted data processing. The AI system Grok allegedly generated posts denying the Holocaust and spreading sexually explicit deepfakes. Grok also faced criticism for generating sexualized, nonconsensual deepfake images in response to user requests. Prosecutors alerted U.S. authorities, suggesting the deepfake controversy may have been orchestrated to inflate the value of X and xAI.
