The director of Darkest Dungeon developer Red Hook Studios confirmed that they would never use generative AI to resurrect the voice of Wayne June, the narrator of Darkest Dungeon, who passed away in January 2025. June's grim, sorrow-filled voice is inseparable from the game.
What happened
According to a Reddit post by director Chris Bourassa, June gave permission to train an AI on his voice in one of his last emails, something he had staunchly opposed previously. Bourassa declined the offer and instead donated to June's family. Bourassa stated that he would never erode June's incredible and timeless performances by teaching a machine to sound like him, emphasizing that June's voice and delivery were human.
