On July 20, 2026, reports emerged of a nationwide phone scam utilizing AI-generated voice technology to impersonate Walmart support. The campaign relies on alarmist tactics to trick recipients into compromising their personal financial data.
What happened
The scam begins with an automated call claiming that a pre-authorized purchase of $919.45 for a PlayStation 5 and a 3D headset has been placed on a Walmart account associated with the recipient's name and phone number. The recorded message instructs the recipient to press one or call back immediately to cancel the order.
According to consumer investigator Brian Roche, the voice used in these calls is almost certainly AI-generated. The objective of the scam is to provoke a panicked response due to the significant dollar amount involved. If the victim engages with the caller, the scammers attempt to extract bank account or credit card information under the guise of issuing a refund. Authorities advise that those receiving such calls should not return the call and instead verify their account status independently for any actual fraudulent charges.
