Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar recently became the target of an AI-generated misinformation campaign. An image circulating on social media falsely depicted the Commissioner making an arrest related to a separate controversy involving an AI-morphed video of actors Jr NTR and Janhvi Kapoor. The incident highlights the growing challenge of synthetic media being used to manipulate public perception and impersonate officials.

What happened

The incident began when an X (formerly Twitter) account shared an AI-generated image claiming that the Hyderabad Police had made an arrest in the case involving an objectionably morphed video from the song Chuttamalle. Commissioner VC Sajjanar identified the image as a deepfake and took to social media to clarify that it was not a genuine photograph. He urged the public to verify the authenticity of online content, noting that AI-generated images are becoming increasingly realistic and are frequently used to spread misinformation.

In his post, Commissioner Sajjanar tagged actor Jr NTR, requesting that he take note of the misuse of his image by individuals identified as the actor's fans. The Commissioner emphasized the importance of questioning visual evidence, stating that convincing appearances do not equate to reality. Following the Commissioner's public call-out, the X page that originally circulated the image deleted the post and issued an apology. However, the situation sparked further online debate, with some users defending the content while others distanced themselves from the act. Jr NTR has not yet issued a formal response to the Commissioner's request.
