A woman in Uttar Pradesh, India, was blackmailed after her photos were manipulated with AI to create obscene images. The perpetrators allegedly extorted money from her and threatened to leak private chats online.

What happened

The accused, a cyber cafe operator and his brother, allegedly used AI to morph the woman's publicly available Instagram photos into explicit images. They then allegedly threatened to circulate the pictures on social media unless she paid them money. The woman initially paid the demanded amount, but the harassment continued. Months later, the accused tracked down the woman’s in-laws’ address and allegedly sent explicit morphed photos to her husband’s mobile phone, demanding more money and threatening to leak old chat records and upload the edited content publicly. A complaint was filed with the police, who are now searching for the suspects. Police suspect that the accused may have similarly targeted multiple women, allegedly extorting money through AI-generated fake images, online intimidation, and threats of social exposure.
