Chatham County police took the suspect, Dieon Cornelius Love, into custody following an incident where he posed as a delivery driver to pick up merchandise from a major national retailer.

What happened

According to authorities, Love utilized artificial intelligence to create fake accounts designed to make illegitimate orders appear authentic. By presenting himself as a delivery driver, he attempted to secure goods from a major national retailer in Chatham County. However, the scheme was thwarted when store managers identified suspicious red flags regarding the orders before any merchandise was released. The staff contacted law enforcement, and no items were handed over to the suspect.

Chatham County Police Chief Jeff Hadley noted that this incident represents the first time the department has encountered artificial intelligence used in a criminal investigation within its jurisdiction. Following his arrest, Love was booked into the Chatham County Detention Center and charged with criminal attempt to commit a misdemeanor.
