A student teacher in Winnipeg was subjected to months of targeted harassment involving AI-generated imagery while completing a practicum at the River East Transcona School Division. The educator reported receiving dozens of sexually explicit messages, including deepfake nude photos created from her own profile pictures, alongside threats of rape and other obscene material.

What happened

Beginning in early April 2024, the victim began receiving messages from an unknown Instagram account. She believed the AI-generated nude images were fabricated using her own social media photos. Despite blocking the sender, the harassment persisted as the perpetrator created new accounts to continue the abuse. Between April and June, the victim received messages from approximately 20 different Instagram accounts, some of which included the school division’s initials in their bios.

In addition to the AI-generated content, the harassment included videos of male masturbation and images of male genitalia. The victim continued to attend the school and perform her teaching duties while the harassment occurred, noting that she felt violated and uncomfortable in her daily interactions with students.

On June 20, Winnipeg police informed the victim that they had arrested a 17-year-old male student in connection with the case. The student was charged with criminal harassment, distribution of an intimate image without consent, mischief to data, and the possession of obscene materials. While the school division stated that disciplinary measures were implemented, the victim expressed that she felt the consequences were insufficient. Local authorities have noted an increase in reports regarding the misuse of artificial intelligence for creating non-consensual imagery and are encouraging victims to report such abuse.
