A man in Georgia was defrauded of money and his vehicle after being manipulated into a long-term online relationship with a persona that did not exist. The victim believed he was engaged to a woman he had never met, unaware that the individual on the other side of the screen was utilizing sophisticated digital tools to maintain the deception.
What happened
Investigators allege that 25-year-old Caleb Mills created a fake identity known as "Hailey Morello" to establish online relationships and defraud victims. To build credibility for the persona, Mills utilized stolen photographs of a real Florida sheriff’s deputy, multiple phone numbers, artificial intelligence, and voice-changing technology.
The victim became so convinced of the relationship's authenticity that he believed he was engaged to the persona. During the course of the deception, the victim provided Mills with an undisclosed amount of money and allowed him to use his vehicle. The scheme eventually unraveled when Mills, posing as "Hailey," filed a harassment complaint with the police after the victim’s relatives began attempting to contact the persona. Detectives investigating the complaint uncovered the fraudulent activity. Mills was subsequently arrested on charges including identity fraud, impersonating a public officer, giving a false name to law enforcement, and making false statements.
