What happened

The incident began after an 11-year-old boy took his parents' pickup truck without permission and collided with a procession of 35 monks and five lay followers in northeastern Thailand, resulting in multiple fatalities. Shortly after, a collage appeared on Instagram and other platforms featuring the boy in a white T-shirt striking a dab pose in front of a monk. The post included Thai-language captions questioning fault and responsibility.

A monk who was part of the procession, Thawach Khamlert, later clarified to AFP that he had taken the original photograph, which showed the boy in the same outfit but not performing the dab gesture. Forensic analysis of the circulating collage revealed several visual inconsistencies indicative of digital manipulation, including mismatched shadows, missing patches of grass, and irregularities in the boy's camouflage hat pattern. Further verification using OpenAI's detection tools confirmed the image was created using AI tools.
