Amidst a fragile ceasefire in May 2026, a video circulated online falsely depicted a damaged warship as a result of a recent exchange of fire between the United States and Iran. The footage was quickly debunked as an AI-generated fabrication, based on an older incident.
What happened
The video, shared on TikTok, claimed to show the aftermath of an Iranian rocket attack on an American destroyer in the Strait of Hormuz. However, a reverse image search revealed that the clip was a remake of footage from a 2012 collision between the USS Porter and a Japanese-owned oil tanker. Google's SynthID tool confirmed that the video was generated using AI. Visual inconsistencies, such as distortions in the appearance of people on the ship's deck, further indicated that the video was fabricated. The account that posted the video regularly uploads similar AI-generated content.
