A viral video circulating online has falsely claimed that a Japanese man known as Toco spent nearly 12 lakh rupees on surgery to transform himself into a dog. In reality, the footage is an AI-generated fabrication that misrepresents a well-documented story from 2023 regarding a man who commissioned a hyper-realistic border collie costume.

What happened

The false claim originated from a video showing a distorted, tattooed creature, which users alleged was the result of extreme surgical procedures. Fact-checkers investigated the claim by reviewing previous news reports from outlets like WION, The Independent, and the South China Morning Post. These reports confirmed that Toco had indeed spent approximately 14,000 US dollars (about 13 lakh rupees) to have a realistic dog costume created, fulfilling a childhood dream. None of these credible sources mentioned any surgical body modification; rather, they documented Toco wearing the suit to play and move like a dog.

To determine the origin of the viral footage, investigators performed a reverse image search and identified significant visual anomalies. The video displayed glaring technical errors, such as the dog’s snout and mouth changing appearance throughout the clip and one of its ears vanishing as the video progressed. To confirm these suspicions, the footage was submitted to the Deepfakes Analysis Unit (DAU). Multiple detection tools, including Imagewhisperer and AI or Not, analyzed the video and confirmed it was AI-generated. The incident highlights how synthetic media can be weaponized to spread misinformation by hijacking the identity of individuals involved in unrelated, documented stories.
