In June 2024, a social studies teacher at Highland Middle School in Libertyville, Illinois, was arrested and charged with eight felony counts of child pornography. The arrest followed a police investigation triggered by reports from students regarding the teacher's conduct.
What happened
The investigation into 44-year-old Marshall Sheffer began on June 3, 2024, after the school district contacted the Libertyville Police Department regarding concerns raised by students. Following the report, detectives secured Sheffer's phone for examination. A forensic review conducted by the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office Cyber Crimes Lab uncovered numerous images of students that had been altered using artificial intelligence to generate explicit content.
As the investigation expanded, law enforcement executed search warrants at Sheffer’s residence to seize additional electronic devices. Authorities utilized electronic storage detection K-9 units to assist in the recovery of digital evidence. Sheffer, who had worked in the district for 18 years, appeared in a Lake County court for a detention hearing. A judge ordered that he remain in custody as the legal proceedings continue. He is currently scheduled for a preliminary hearing on July 30.
