In late March 2024, an investigation by the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams led to criminal charges against two 14-year-old boys following the creation of exploitative images targeting students at an Edmonton school. The incident was brought to the attention of authorities after a teacher reported the materials following complaints from students.

What happened

The investigation revealed that the accused used a combination of photos taken without consent and additional images harvested from social media platforms to generate the content. Artificial intelligence software was then utilized to transform these source photos into exploitative images. As a result of the investigation, both boys were charged with voyeurism and the making and possession of child sexual exploitation materials. This incident follows a similar case investigated in Calgary, which resulted in a charge against a high school student in December.
