In June 2024, educational institutions in Guwahati, including St. Francis de Sales (SFS) School and Delhi Public School (DPS), faced serious allegations regarding the creation and distribution of AI-generated deepfake imagery. Reports surfaced on social media claiming that male students used artificial intelligence to produce explicit images of female students and teachers, which were then allegedly shared among classmates and on digital platforms.
What happened
The incident came to public attention on June 11, 2024, when social media discussions and online posts alleged that students had generated and circulated digitally manipulated content. At SFS School, the administration stated they became aware of the allegations at 12:30 pm and immediately initiated established procedures, including a referral to the Child Abuse Monitoring Committee (CAMC). The school confirmed that a preliminary inquiry is underway and that students directly involved in the matter have been placed under suspension pending the outcome of the investigation.
Simultaneously, reports emerged involving a student from DPS Guwahati, who was also reportedly suspended for similar activities. Beyond the administrative inquiries, online discourse has been highly critical of the handling of these incidents. Students and community members have alleged that school authorities attempted to suppress discussion of the events, discouraged victims and witnesses from speaking out, and threatened students with disciplinary actions such as the confiscation of phones or the revocation of social media access. Further allegations circulating on social media claim that some of the generated images were sold to peers for small sums of money. While schools have emphasized a zero-tolerance policy toward cyber misconduct and harassment, the situation has sparked widespread concern among parents and the public regarding student safety, privacy, and the influence of political pressure on school disciplinary processes.
