A digitally fabricated image circulated on social media in May 2026, falsely depicted Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati being attacked by bees. The image, shared with critical commentary, was proven to be AI-generated.

What happened

An AI detection analysis revealed that the image was not authentic. While a real bee attack did occur during a gathering, a review of the Shankaracharya's social media and media reports confirmed the viral image was a fabrication. A live video showed the actual bee attack, which did not resemble the AI-generated image. Media reports corroborated the bee attack but did not include the viral image. A media coordinator for Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati confirmed that the viral image was fake.
