On September 28, 2026, Santa Ana residents were placed on alert after a man reported a deadly African viper lurking in a local backyard. The false report prompted an hours-long search by police officers and reptile specialists, who combed the area for a threat that did not exist.
What happened
The incident began when a man called 911 to report a Gaboon viper perched in a tree, providing an image as evidence. Authorities issued a public warning urging residents to avoid the area due to the highly venomous nature of the snake. However, experts quickly raised doubts regarding the photo's authenticity, noting that the ground-dwelling snake appeared impossibly balanced on a thin branch, with the branch seemingly passing through its body.
Despite these inconsistencies, law enforcement conducted an exhaustive search throughout the day. By Monday evening, police cleared the scene after failing to locate the animal. During a follow-up investigation on Tuesday, the reporting party admitted to detectives that the image was AI-generated and that his initial report was false. Authorities have not yet disclosed potential consequences for the individual involved.
