On October 22, 2024, Sand Springs Public Schools launched an investigation after AI-generated deepfake images depicting school administrators were circulated to students through district-issued email accounts. The incident prompted the temporary suspension of all student email access across the district as officials addressed the breach of digital citizenship policy.

What happened

A Charles Page High School student used school-issued platforms and networks to distribute the AI-generated imagery on a Tuesday evening. The deepfake photos depicted administrators engaging in inappropriate conduct, which the Sand Springs Police Department clarified involved inappropriate language of a sexual nature.

Upon discovering the distribution of the non-consensual imagery, the district issued a letter to parents emphasizing that the creation and sharing of such content constitutes serious behavioral misconduct. The district is currently investigating the full scope of the incident and the individuals involved. While the Sand Springs Police Department has identified the student responsible for sending the email, the investigation remains ongoing.

In response to the incident, the district has invoked District Policy EFBCA regarding Internet Use. Students found responsible for the creation or distribution of these images face potential disciplinary actions, including the loss of computer privileges, suspension, or expulsion. Furthermore, the district noted that violators and their parents or guardians could be subject to civil or criminal penalties under Oklahoma and federal law. The police department is continuing to work with school officials to resolve the matter, and the district has committed to updating families once student email services are restored.
