What happened

The most notable incident occurred in 2024, when a deepfake video emerged depicting Mayor Khan at The Cenotaph. The manipulated footage appeared to show him making dismissive remarks regarding Armistice Day. The video, which utilized AI technology to mimic his likeness and voice, was used to spread lies and misinformation about his actions. Following the circulation of this fake video, far-right activists gathered at the site, resulting in confrontations where police officers were assaulted.

Mayor Khan noted that he frequently encounters deepfake audio and video content featuring himself on social media platforms. While he stated that he is able to identify and reject such disinformation, he expressed deep concern that vulnerable young people are more likely to be influenced by these realistic, AI-generated fabrications. He emphasized that these deceptive videos are designed to foster negative perceptions of his work and have the potential to lead to civil disorder. The Mayor has urged technology companies to take greater responsibility for the content circulating on their algorithms, arguing that the spread of such material requires urgent intervention to protect public discourse.
