According to Stefan Dasic, a senior malware research engineer at Malwarebytes, the process is designed to ensure victims have no recourse: once a user sends the cryptocurrency, they are prompted to enter a transaction ID to unlock a download that never materializes. Because these transactions are irreversible, victims have no means of recovering their funds, unlike traditional credit card chargebacks.

The scams exploit the intense psychological pressure surrounding the game's November 19, 2026, release date and the 13-year gap since the previous mainline entry. By emphasizing urgency and exclusivity, scammers pressure fans into making impulsive decisions. Furthermore, these fraudulent sites are part of a broader trend of AI-fueled crypto fraud, with reports of such activities rising significantly over the past year.
