As Rockstar Games opened official pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI on June 25, 2026, cybercriminals launched a wave of fraudulent websites promising exclusive early access to the highly anticipated title. These sites leverage the massive hype surrounding the franchise to lure fans into sending cryptocurrency payments for a game that does not exist. Cybersecurity firm Malwarebytes identified these operations, noting that they use AI-generated imagery and premium design aesthetics to mimic legitimate storefronts, often featuring neon Vice City branding to build credibility.
What happened
The scam websites entice users with offers of "VIP Digital Access" or "Exclusive Early Access Preview," charging victims approximately $250. To facilitate these payments, the sites exclusively accept cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, USDT, or Ethereum. According to Stefan Dasic, a senior malware research engineer at Malwarebytes, the process is designed to ensure victims have no recourse: once a user sends the cryptocurrency, they are prompted to enter a transaction ID to unlock a download that never materializes. Because these transactions are irreversible, victims have no means of recovering their funds, unlike traditional credit card chargebacks.
The scams exploit the intense psychological pressure surrounding the game's November 19, 2026, release date and the 13-year gap since the previous mainline entry. By emphasizing urgency and exclusivity, scammers pressure fans into making impulsive decisions. Furthermore, these fraudulent sites are part of a broader trend of AI-fueled crypto fraud, with reports of such activities rising significantly over the past year. Rockstar Games has confirmed that there is no early-access program of any kind, and all legitimate pre-orders are restricted to authorized digital storefronts and select retailers at standard pricing of $79.99 or $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition.
