A Brooklyn couple, Robin and Steve, were targeted in a deepfake voice scam where the scammers convincingly mimicked the voice of Steve's mother, Mona, to extort money. The scammers demanded money, claiming to hold Mona hostage. After receiving the money via Venmo, they hung up. Mona was unharmed.
