What happened

An AI-generated deepfake video featuring physician Renaud Piarroux was circulated on Facebook to promote fraudulent health products. The video, which adopted the visual identity of a TF1 news report, featured a synthetic version of Dr. Piarroux claiming that parasites, rather than aging or stress, were the cause of common health ailments. The content encouraged viewers to click a link to purchase a supposed natural remedy, alleging that the medical industry was attempting to suppress this information.

The production exhibited several technical flaws, including a static visual style, repetitive stock imagery, and numerous spelling errors in the subtitles. Despite these indicators of manipulation, the video and its variants were shared across various Facebook profiles and groups, particularly those focused on alternative medicine and anti-vaccination theories.

In response, the Assistance publique – Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP) and Sorbonne Université issued a joint statement condemning the content as a significant danger to patient health. The institutions emphasized that they do not engage in commercial promotion on social media and that the use of a healthcare professional's image does not guarantee the authenticity of any publication. AP-HP and Sorbonne Université have filed a formal complaint and contacted Meta to request the removal of the videos. While the platform reportedly took action, the institutions noted that similar videos continued to reappear on the site.
