A Reddit user recently reported a sophisticated phishing attempt targeting their cryptocurrency holdings, involving a coordinated effort by individuals posing as law enforcement and hardware wallet support staff. The incident highlights the evolving tactics used by scammers to create a false sense of urgency and vulnerability regarding digital asset security.
What happened
The victim received a phone call from an individual claiming to be a Metropolitan Police officer named Michael Anderson. The caller utilized a spoofed number appearing as a local police station and provided a fake crime reference number to establish credibility. During the hour-long conversation, the scammer claimed the victim's personal data, including email, passwords, and driving license, had been compromised in a data leak.
To manipulate the victim, the caller referenced specific hardware wallet brands and warned about the increasing risks of keylogging malware and AI deepfakes, suggesting that criminals could use leaked driving license photos to create fraudulent content. By framing the call as a courtesy to protect the victim from potential home invasions and financial theft, the scammer successfully induced the victim to check their Ledger wallet for unauthorized activity.
Immediately following the police impersonation, the victim received a second call from an individual identifying as 'Lauren Hardy' from Ledger Support. This caller claimed that the police had contacted the company regarding the alleged data breach and attempted to initiate a fraudulent account switch to the 'Ledger Recovery Service.' The victim recognized the pattern as a scam and did not provide any sensitive information, such as their 24-word recovery phrase. Ledger has reiterated that they never initiate contact via phone, text, or social media, and that users should only interact with support through official channels.
