In May 2026, a series of AI-generated videos circulated across multiple social media platforms, falsely alleging that Canada had rejected a $573 billion railway bailout requested by the United States. These fabricated reports claimed that Canada subsequently pulled its railway lines from the border, a narrative that contradicted official railway schedules and operational realities.

What happened

The disinformation campaign utilized a network of accounts on Instagram, TikTok, Threads, LinkedIn, and Facebook to disseminate unverified and sensationalized stories. The content featured an AI avatar—described as an Asian man with glasses—whose stilted speech and desynchronized mouth movements indicated the use of synthetic media. Technical analysis from the Hive Moderation AI detection tool supported the conclusion that the videos were deepfakes or AI-generated content.

Beyond the avatar-based clips, the campaign employed AI to impersonate reputable news figures, including American journalist Rachel Maddow, to lend false credibility to the claims. AFP confirmed that no such railway bailout request existed and that major rail companies, Canadian National (CN) and Canada Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), continued their standard cross-border operations as of June 2026. Transport Canada clarified that these private companies operate independently of government trade policy. Researchers identified this incident as part of a larger, ongoing effort where networks of channels produce "AI slop" to spread fabricated news content targeting North American political relations.
