A coordinated influence operation is targeting Hungary’s 2026 parliamentary elections by deploying AI-generated content to discredit opposition leader Péter Magyar and support Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. NewsGuard identified a network of 34 anonymous TikTok accounts that have collectively garnered approximately 10 million views through a variety of synthetic media tactics.
What happened
The campaign utilized diverse AI synthesis techniques to manipulate political discourse. One account, "BrüsszelÜzem," published six fabricated news reports featuring an AI-generated anchor and "expert" guests. Analysis using Hive software confirmed these anchors were AI-generated with 100 percent certainty, exhibiting static facial features and unnatural blinking patterns. These reports falsely characterized Magyar as aggressive, using real footage of him at press events to support fabricated narratives.
Beyond fake news, the network employed a wide range of AI-generated imagery to influence voters. This included videos featuring deepfake-style portrayals of Hollywood celebrities like Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio, as well as boxer Jake Paul, who were depicted disparaging Magyar or warning of economic instability under his leadership. Other content used AI to animate animals, toddlers, and cartoon characters to voice anti-Magyar and anti-Zelensky sentiments. The operation also spread narratives regarding potential conscription and social issues to stoke fear among the electorate. TikTok confirmed the accounts were part of a covert influence operation and subsequently banned them, noting that the network had been previously disrupted.
