The family of the late broadcaster Paul Vaughan has publicly challenged the Royal Mail following the discovery that an AI-generated voice was used in the company's 2025 Christmas advertisement. Lucy Vaughan, the daughter of the narrator who passed away in 2014, identified the voice as sounding remarkably like her father, sparking a controversy over the use of synthetic media in commercial advertising.

What happened

In November 2025, Lucy Vaughan and her husband Darren recognized a voiceover in a Royal Mail holiday commercial that they believed belonged to Paul Vaughan, a renowned narrator known for his work on Horizon and various audiobooks. Despite the Royal Mail never having employed Vaughan during his lifetime, the company confirmed that the advertisement utilized an AI-generated voice. The production was overseen by the agency Darwin & the Machines and Untold Studios, with the voiceover subcontracted to the Czech-based AI firm Fameplay.

Royal Mail stated that their external partners advised them the voice was created using prompts and was not intended to replicate any specific individual. However, reports indicated that production team members had previously warned against using AI for the campaign. Fameplay and the technology provider, ElevenLabs, denied that the audio was a direct clone of Vaughan. Following the public outcry, ElevenLabs added Paul Vaughan to its "No Go Voices" list to prevent future cloning of his vocal characteristics. The incident has intensified calls for stronger legal protections for voice actors against unauthorized generative AI usage, coinciding with broader industry campaigns seeking to safeguard human performers from synthetic replication.
