Patrizia Schlosser deepfake (Jan 2025)

Investigative reporter Patrizia Schlosser was targeted with deepfake pornography on the website MrDeepFakes. The site hosts tens of thousands of videos and images, has close to 650,000 members, and receives millions of visits a month. The content has been viewed almost two billion times. The site's administrators have remained anonymous, using methods like cryptocurrency payments and unverifiable PayPal accounts to obscure ownership. The site advertised apps like Deepswap, which allows users to create deepfake photos and videos. Deepswap was linked to companies with connections to Nexgo, a publicly traded Chinese fintech company. Concerns exist about Nexgo's potential involvement due to Chinese laws prohibiting deepfakes and the complex corporate structure used.
