Several prominent Canadian news organizations, including the Ottawa Citizen, Montreal Gazette, and Policy Options, have retracted articles published under the name Daniel Robson. Editors discovered that the persona, who claimed to be an independent journalist specializing in terrorism and cybercrime, could not be verified as a real person and likely utilized AI-generated content and imagery.

What happened

The deception began to unravel when the persona pitched a suspicious story regarding a drug plot to the Turkey-based news outlet Turkiye Today. When the managing editor of Turkiye Today requested a video call to discuss the details, the individual behind the Robson persona refused, citing agitation and eventually threatening repercussions. This refusal prompted an investigation into the writer's background, revealing that the headshot used for the persona was likely AI-generated and that the biographical information provided to various publications was inaccurate.

Editors at Policy Options and the Ottawa Citizen noted that while the persona had been cooperative during previous editing rounds, they were unable to establish his identity or confirm his expertise. The Ottawa Citizen specifically reported that attempts to meet or call the individual were rebuffed, with the persona ending communication once pressed for verification. Further investigation by other outlets revealed that the Robson persona had author pages at several other Canadian publications, all of which were subsequently taken down. Digital research later suggested a potential link to a Moroccan Microsoft account associated with the persona's email address, though the true identity of the actor remains unknown. The incident has prompted Canadian media organizations to strengthen their contributor verification procedures to guard against similar AI-driven fraud.
