In late August 2024, the Oregon Humane Society (OHS) identified a viral social media video as a complete fabrication, marking a growing trend of AI-generated content exploiting animal welfare narratives. The video, which purported to show an 81-year-old woman named Eleanor surrendering her golden retriever, Duke, at the OHS Portland campus, prompted significant public concern and numerous inquiries to the organization.

What happened

The incident began when OHS communications staffers Laura Klink and Sarah Yusavitz were alerted to a video circulating on social media platforms. The content featured a fabricated story about an elderly woman forced to give up her pet due to a care facility's restrictive policies. Multiple Instagram accounts, including @truthsphere4u and @pinkup01, shared the video, with the latter garnering over 62,000 likes. The posts falsely claimed the event occurred on a Wednesday afternoon at the OHS Portland facility.

OHS clarified that the video was 100% fake. Klink noted that the organization would never film or share such a distressing private moment involving a former pet owner. The video appears to be part of a broader network of AI-generated "slop" designed to exploit viewer emotions for engagement, views, and ad revenue. These accounts frequently cycle through recurring themes, such as veterans comforted by dogs or other heart-wrenching surrender stories in different states. The prevalence of such content has created operational headaches for OHS, as staff must spend time addressing public confusion and debunking false claims. While OHS has encouraged staff to report these videos, the organization noted that current tools for recourse are limited, leaving the public to navigate an increasingly difficult landscape of AI-generated misinformation.
