In June 2024, a resident of Nui Cam Commune in Vietnam faced legal consequences after reporting a crocodile sighting that was based on a digitally fabricated image. The incident led to a local investigation and public safety concerns before authorities discovered the source of the misinformation.

What happened

Tran Thi Thanh Nhan, a 38-year-old resident of An Giang Province, reported to local authorities that an approximately 80kg crocodile had been spotted in the Vinh Tre Canal. To substantiate the report, she submitted several images as evidence, which she believed were genuine. Following the report, commune officials issued public warnings advising residents to exercise caution near the canal and deployed personnel to investigate the area.

After an extensive search, no signs of a crocodile were found. The situation was resolved when Nhan's 17-year-old daughter contacted the police to admit that the images were not real and had been generated using AI. The daughter explained that she had created the images and shared them in a family chat group on the messaging app Zalo, which led her mother to believe the threat was authentic. As a result of the incident, Nui Cam Commune authorities announced that Nhan was fined VND7.5 million (US$290) for sharing false or misleading information.
