In April 2026, the search for a runaway wolf in South Korea was briefly sidetracked by a deepfake. The incident highlights the potential for AI-generated content to disrupt real-world events.

What happened

Neukgu, a two-year-old wolf, escaped from a zoo in Daejeon on April 8th. During the search, a 40-year-old man created and shared an AI-generated image purporting to show Neukgu trotting down a road intersection. The image prompted authorities to urgently relocate their search operation. The Daejeon city government even issued an emergency text to residents, warning them of a wolf near the intersection. Authorities also presented the AI image during a press briefing. Police identified the man after reviewing security camera footage and his AI program usage records. The man stated he did it "for fun." He is being investigated for disrupting government work by deception.
