A prospective renter discovered that a property listing in Heidelberg Heights, Victoria, had been significantly altered using generative AI. The images provided by the real estate agency, Nelson Alexander, depicted features that were entirely absent from the actual property, leading to a discrepancy between the online advertisement and the physical inspection.
What happened
When a potential tenant inspected the property in Heidelberg Heights, they found that the online listing photos did not match the reality of the home. The AI-altered images had been modified to include an additional window, a new shower, and redesigned cupboards in both the kitchen and bathroom. These additions were not present in the actual property, as confirmed by unedited photographs taken during the inspection.
Nelson Alexander acknowledged the use of AI tools on the listing and confirmed that the practice should not have occurred. Jamie Owen, the agency's COO, stated that the use of AI-generated or materially altered property images is not an accepted practice at Nelson Alexander and contradicts company policies. The agency admitted that the images were not an accurate representation of the property and maintained that they had previously communicated to their teams that AI should never be used to alter or edit property images.
