Telugu star Naga Chaitanya has taken legal action against the misuse of his image in deepfakes and AI-generated content. He approached the Delhi High Court to protect his personality rights against these technologies, as well as unauthorized merchandise.
What happened
The actor's team informed the court that his image was being used in harmful ways on various websites and social media platforms, including AI-generated videos and deepfake clips that portrayed him in objectionable situations. Some videos falsely linked him with his former wife, making claims of cheating and career damage. The actor also claimed that pornographic websites used his name in domain names, tags, and search results, creating a false association with obscene content. Legal notices had been sent to platforms and intermediaries, but the responses were insufficient. The court acknowledged that public figures face more scrutiny but emphasized that there should still be limits. YouTube lawyers stated that some AI-generated videos had been removed, while others were linked to news reports with different legal standards. The Delhi High Court issued summons in the case and indicated that it would pass an interim order to protect the actor’s personality rights.
