Creator Muskan Karia speaks out after AI deepfake leads…

In late May 2024, content creator Muskan Karia discovered an AI-generated deepfake depicting her in a compromising situation, which she later addressed through a police complaint. The 22-year-old creator faced significant personal distress as she was forced to prove to friends and family that the realistic, sexually suggestive footage was digitally manipulated rather than authentic.

What happened

The incident began when Karia received an Instagram message containing the manipulated clip. She discovered that the deepfake had been created by altering an ordinary, non-compromising video that she had previously shared exclusively with her subscribers. Because the source material was personal, the resulting deepfake appeared highly realistic, causing Karia to remain silent for nearly two months while the video circulated online.

Karia sought legal counsel and submitted both the original, legitimate video and the manipulated version to the Cyber Cell. Following the registration of an FIR, the Maharashtra Police tracked down the individuals responsible for the creation of the content and made arrests. To help Karia clear her name, the police issued an official certificate confirming that the circulating video was a complete deepfake. Throughout the ordeal, Karia emphasized the immense difficulty victims face when forced to explain such content to their families and highlighted the broader risks posed by generative AI tools used to target creators.
