In August 2024, Queensland police charged a 52-year-old man for allegedly orchestrating a multi-year campaign that used artificial intelligence to superimpose women's faces onto explicit imagery. The suspect reportedly printed these deepfake images as posters and displayed them in public spaces throughout southeast Queensland, including toilets and parks.
What happened
The accused allegedly used AI technology to generate intimate images featuring the faces of at least eight identified victims, who range in age from 40 to 60. Beyond the manipulated imagery, the posters included sensitive personal details such as the women's full names, social media usernames, employment history, and residential information, effectively advertising them for sexual services.
Police became aware of the activity in May 2024 following a report of a poster displayed in a public venue in Gatton. Investigators discovered that the campaign had been ongoing since 2021, with the perpetrator intending to publicly humiliate and degrade the victims. Many of the targeted women were unaware of the posters until they were alerted by colleagues, friends, or neighbors. The impact was particularly severe for those living in smaller communities, where the images followed them into their workplaces, children's schools, and local businesses.
Following a raid on the suspect's home in Cleveland, police seized electronic devices, printers, and pre-prepared deepfake posters. Additionally, officers recovered an electronic control weapon, three long firearms, and ammunition. The man faces 43 charges, including the distribution of intimate images, unlawful stalking, using communication services to menace or harass, and firearm-related offenses. He has been remanded in custody.
