On June 11, 2026, the federal privacy commissioner of Canada is scheduled to release the results of an investigation concerning sexualized deepfakes generated by Elon Musk's Grok AI chatbot. The inquiry was initiated in January to address the proliferation of these images on the X social media platform.
What happened
Privacy Commissioner Philippe Dufresne launched the investigation to determine if the companies involved were in compliance with privacy laws and whether they had obtained valid consent to collect, use, and disclose personal information for the creation of deepfakes, specifically those containing explicit content. Dufresne noted that the non-consensual use of personal information to produce intimate deepfake imagery poses significant risks to privacy rights.
The widespread creation and sharing of these images triggered a global backlash, prompting similar investigations in the United Kingdom, the European Union, and California. In response to these developments, the Canadian government has introduced legislation aimed at criminalizing the production of non-consensual sexual deepfakes.
